Web Services at Cornell

What and why Web Services? The need for independent, and yet interoperable, pieces leads us to a service oriented architecture (SOA) and the changes we see beginning in application architecture.

Web Services let us meet the desire for direct user interaction with systems via the web, taking advantage of:

  • Extensible Markup Language (XML)
  • Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP)
  • Web Services Description Language (WSDL)
  • Universal Description, Discovery & Integration (UDDI)
  • Vendor-supplied interfaces
  • Web Service "wrappers"
